“To perfect that wonder of travel – the locomotive – has perhaps not required the expenditure of more mental strength and application, than to perfect that wonder of music – the Violin.”

    -W. E. Gladstone.

A Fine Violin by E. Whitmarsh London Circa 1900

    Sold or On Loan

A violin by the London maker E. Whitmarsh, circa 1900. This violin is in almost new condition showing no signs of use or wear. The oil varnish is immaculate and typical of English makers in this period. Deep orange, red and brown in colour, full of depth and character. The back is a vivid, highly figured flamed maple and the front is of evenly grained pine. The f holes are very characteristic and quite unusual.

The tone is superb, very even across all the strings, bright and woody, full of character.

Our luthier has given this violin a new set up with Evah Pirazzi strings and brand new pegs. The tailpiece is wholly original and is very rare and interesting.

The length of the back is 354 mm.

A Fine Amati Copy Made by Grandjon Circa 1890

    SOLD

This is a lovely violin probably made by the Grandjon family in Mirecourt towards the end of the 19th Century.  It is a wonderfully elegant copy of a Nicolaus Amati.  The arching is incredibly attractive and gives the violin a very Amatis style feminine look. The back is of magnificent flamed maple layered with a brilliant orange brown varnish with rich amber yellow undertones.

The tone is exactly as described in Henley's dictionary "stong, with no persuasive quality of sympathy."

The length of the back is 358 mm.

    Fine Violin By Honoré Derazey

    SOLD

A superb violin by Honoré Derazey circa 1850.  This is a great example of Honoré's work probably from his Mirecourt years.

Derazey was a prolific maker for several ateliers in Paris in the mid 19th Century. He quickly established his own workshop in Mirecourt and won several awards from Paris and London for his work.  Many of his instruments were sold through J. B. Vuillaume who inserted his own label which occasionally mislead experts to belive Derazey's work to be that of Vuillaume himself! Just highlighting the quality of Derazey's instruments.

This violin has a warm mellow tone with a fantastic bottom end and crystal clear highs . A worthwhile investment.

The length of the back is 356 mm.
